Understanding forage performance with hydroponic cultivation processes

Feeding cattle is an important part of the success of any farm. For this reason, many different parameters must be taken into account. At least 4000 kg of milk – or 50% of the milk – should be fed from the forage. Sustainable grassland management with reseeding, fertilization and appropriate cutting height is a prerequisite for good forage quality. The plant composition (grasses, clover, herbs, etc.), the dry matter content and fiber content as well as the chop length determine the structure and are decisive for digestibility. Together with energy content and protein quality, they determine the basic feed quality. This can also be achieved with Litrax Hydroponik. Forage quality is determined by palatability and ingredients. Cows prefer energy-rich forage. In order to produce grass silage with over 6.0 MJ NEL / kg DM, 60-70 % sugary grass varieties should be present in the meadow. Cutting at the time of ear/shoot emergence ensures the maximum energy content in the substrate at this time. Litrax Hydroponik enables you to harvest regardless of season, cutting time and weather. Litrax Hydroponics helps you to produce consistently high-quality forage 365 days a year, regardless of the climate.

Hydroponics as a solution for forage quality deficiencies, crop failures or yield reductions

Hydroponics can help to compensate for quality deficiencies or crop failures in a targeted manner. The Litrax LXMG-3L-125 feed growth system offers the prerequisites for this and can be adjusted precisely to the needs of the farmer in terms of both light and nutrient quality. We encourage farmers to experiment with all the modular components and processes of a hydroponic forage production system to find out what best suits their operational needs. With hydroponics you avoid typical field losses (nutrient-rich fine leaf) or dry matter and energy losses during the ensiling process, spoilage during mold growth, leachate, as you only produce absolutely fresh feed, thus giving the cattle the opportunity to receive first-class, absolutely fresh feed even in winter, gourmet for cattle and other livestock, so to speak!

Feed / Microgreen module

The Litrax Feed & Microgreen System LXMG requires no pesticides, only clean water and high quality nutrients (e.g. from Hauert), so that the products grown with this system are green and sustainable in every respect. Combined with a solar power system and atmospheric water harvesting, you achieve 100% sustainability and independence from weather conditions. Normally the sprouts grown with this system reach a height of 20 cm within 5-7 days and can be harvested and used for feeding or sale. Depending on the different specifications of our systems, customers can produce between 10 to 100 kg of sprouts per day (modular expandable system). As the system is used for indoor cultivation, it is not affected by external climatic conditions and can ensure a stable daily yield. It is therefore also an effective means of compensating for the lack of green fodder in winter.

Our LXMG system has the following advantages:
  • High yield
  • Rapid growth of animal feed
  • Low energy consumption
  • Simple operation
  • 70% reduction in water consumption
  • Low maintenance effort
  • Low operating costs
  • Compensation for known environmental changes such as global soil depletion, salinization and desertification, especially in areas with scarce or poor-quality arable land
  • Modular expandable with individual modules, or feed production in hydroponic containers (20 feet / 40 feet) with 500 to 1500 kg feed yield per day
Key features
  • Light spectrum to maximize the size and weight of full-sized plants
  • Individual nutrient supply and quality adjustment for tasty basic feed
  • Growing bed for the production of whole plants, grasses or herbs
  • Flat flow mode of 15L / 4 gal per add-on bed
  • Expected 14-15 hour light cycle, freely adjustable up to a theoretical 24 hours per day.
  • Up to 5-10 kg of feed per day (depending on light intensity, duration and nutrient liquid)
Contains
  • 3 LED light strips per layer (24 watts)
  • 3 layers (levels)
  • Light spectrum for mature and rapid growth
  • Ideal distance between light and bed for nutrient-rich feed
  • Water pump for constant water flow
  • Roles for system mobility
  • 1.25 m high
Modular expansion

The LXMG system can be expanded modularly. Feed systems of the LXMG type can achieve between 500 and 1500 kg of feed per day per container with container dimensions and configuration!

Reducing feed costs with hydroponic systems

The feed costs per kg of milk amount to 49-52% of the production costs. The nutrient requirement, which covers the maintenance requirement, depends on the live weight and is therefore largely constant, so the relative nutrient requirement per kg of milk produced decreases with increasing yield. An increase in yield from 6000 kg milk/cow/year to 9000 kg reduces the energy requirement by approx. 14%/kg milk. The protein requirement decreases by about 9%. Consequently, the feed costs/kg milk are reduced. In order to reduce costs, it is therefore important to improve the efficiency of feeding and management. Hydroponics can help you do this!

Microgreen System Application of the LXMG

The LXMG system is not only suitable for forage cultivation, but also for the germination of crops such as soybeans, black beans, peas, etc. and can also be used for the early germination of various small leafy vegetables such as rape, lettuce, coriander, etc.; in many countries the price of sprouts is quite high, so the Microgreen system can bring great economic benefits. Microgreens (seedlings) and baby leaves for the food service industry

Microgreens are immature plants that are harvested shortly after the germination stage. Microgreens are very popular with growers as they are produced quickly and are often ready to harvest after just 7 to 21 days. A plant is ready to harvest at a height of 2-5 cm. Microgreens are popular with top chefs and gourmets because of their strong flavor and high nutrient content. Microgreens are produced in the germination (sowing) and propagation module. Examples of the harvest maturity of microgreens: Ready to harvest within 7 days: radish, sunflowers, pea sprouts, corn sprouts, buckwheat Ready to harvest within 10 days: rocket, cabbage, choi, kale, mustard cabbage Ready to harvest within 18-21 days: amaranth, basil, carrots, celery, chard, coriander, cress, basil, dill, spring onions, shiso

Baby Leafs are immature plants that are harvested when the leaves are between 2 and 5 inches tall, when they are at their most tender. Baby Leaves are most commonly grown and packaged for ready-to-eat blends. Pre-prepared blends are the most commonly desired product. Baby Leaves can be grown in Litrax in raft or tray production, as well as in the LXMG system.
